When I was collaborating with the DeBruce Foundation we created this short video on beliefs:
Let’s talk about the power of beliefs. Beliefs are so incredibly powerful. So let’s start with the limiting beliefs.
What is a limiting belief?
A limiting belief is something that you usually form before the age of fifteen. It’s a belief that you hold about yourself based upon an experience you have had or something that someone said to you. You then created this old story around the belief that runs over and over again in your mind just like a broken record on a record player. We just need to move the needle over onto a new song on that turntable so that you can reroute your limiting beliefs into positive ones.
How do you do that?
Well your brain is thirty three percent autopilot, but it’s sixty six percent programmable. That means that you can learn to divert yourself from a limiting belief to a positive one, but you can only do that after you discover your limiting beliefs.
These are the 5 most common limiting beliefs:
- I’m not smart enough
- I’m not capable
- I’m not attractive
- I can’t turn it around
- I don’t deserve it
What I want you to do is find the limiting beliefs that have been bugging you and write them down.
Now let’s find a positive belief to replace them with. Oftentimes we can find that positive belief by reframing the negative.
Reframing the negative:
- I am smart
- I am capable
- I am attractive
- I deserve this
- I can do this
Write your positive beliefs down. Now that you have your negative and positive beliefs, let’s get to shifting them.
So how do you do that?
You have to become the detective in your life and know that some situations create anxiety and it’s those situations in which our limiting beliefs often emerge. These could be moments like when you’re tired or you had too much sugar or you’re going in to take a test or you’re going in to apply for a job. It’s moments like these when negative beliefs can surface and you want to be on the alert.
When that negative belief starts to rise up and clamp onto your leg to pull you down the slippery slope, I want you to STOP the action and then say to yourself CHANGE!!!
Next I want you to repeat to yourself that positive belief:
- I am smart
- I am capable
- I am attractive
- I deserve this
- I can do this
Then after you have done that go into the rest of your day with that confidence knowing you can change your beliefs from the negative to the positive!
I know you can do it. Let’s go from goal setting to goal getting.
Join me in changing your beliefs!
